Imagine a world where quality healthcare is accessible to everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status. This vision has taken one step closer to becoming a reality with the launch of Los Angeles County’s first-ever fleet of mobile clinics on wheels. Partnering with County District 1 and the County Department of Health Services, Odulair is proud to offer mobile clinics that will serve people in homeless encampments.
This innovative solution is much needed, as homeless advocates who work in encampments have long voiced the need for more accessible medical care. According to Michael Lopez, a homeless advocate, “It is long overdue, long overdue. Those people out there need a lot of attention, a lot of help.” With the launch of the Odulair mobile clinics, individuals experiencing homelessness can now receive the medical attention they need and deserve.
The mobile clinics will be stationed in East Los Angeles, Lincoln Heights, Skid Row, and Whittier Narrows. However, the four units will also make daily stops at homeless encampments across the county, providing easy access to quality healthcare for those who need it most.
Each mobile clinic is equipped with a full-service exam room, a physician, nurses, a counselor, and a social worker. This means that the units can provide primary care and urgent care services, such as healing wounds. For individuals in Skid Row, this is especially important. As Charles Porter, a member of the Skid Row Neighborhood Council, highlights, “In Skid Row too many of our neighbors and community members have succumbed to death and illness because they didn’t get the social support and medical care that they needed.”
In addition to providing essential medical care, the Odulair mobile clinics are also equipped with a medicine cabinet that will be filled with vaccines. The units will also store some medication, so a patient can save a trip to the pharmacy. This is especially crucial for individuals experiencing homelessness, as it can be challenging to access transportation to a pharmacy or other medical facilities.
The mobile clinics can also provide blood draws and send samples off to the labs. As Dr. Christina Ghaly, director of county Health Services, explains, “This mobile clinic can provide blood draws and get samples sent off to the labs. So, again, clients don’t have to come in for a separate visit.” This means that individuals can receive comprehensive medical care without having to make multiple trips or appointments.
In summary, the launch of Los Angeles County’s first-ever fleet of mobile clinics on wheels is a game-changer for individuals experiencing homelessness in the region. Thanks to the innovative partnership between County District 1 and the County Department of Health Services, Odulair is proud to offer mobile clinics that will provide easy access to quality healthcare for those who need it most. With full-service exam rooms, physicians, nurses, counselors, and social workers, the mobile clinics are well-equipped to provide essential medical care and prevent serious medical conditions from going undetected.
