Will you need a CDL to drive a mobile clinic?
The weight of a mobile medical vehicle has practical consequences on who can legally drive it. There are different types of driver’s licenses according to different vehicle weight limits.
Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) above the 26,000 pounds legal threshold require a CDL driver’s license. That is a different type of driver’s license than the one required to drive a personal car. The type of driver’s license known as CDL, stands for commercial driver’s license.
Gross Vehicle Weight ( GVWR ) is the weight of the vehicle including the curb weight (also known as empty weight), added to the weight of the driver and all passengers, engine, engine fluids, fuel, and any cargo that the vehicle may be carrying. That is, the curb (or empty) weight, is the truck’s weight without any cargo or occupants.
A mobile clinic’s GVWR, or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, is the heaviest the mobile clinic vehicle can weigh, while still safe to operate. For example, a mobile clinic may have an ’empty’ curb weight of 5,500 pounds and a GVWR of 7,000 pounds. Subtracting 5,500 from 7,000 lbs is equal to 1,500 lbs. And this means you can safely load an additional 1,500 pounds in the vehicle.
